Citizen science and radioactivity measurement: OpenRadiation strengthens its European presence

For the first time, on June 4, the workshop on citizen science and the measurement of radioactivity brought together the main players in the field at the Maison Irène et Frédéric Joliot-Curie in Brussels.

The meeting marked an important milestone in consolidating the European network and paving the way for new collaborations with some forty participants, including representatives from the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the European Commission (DG RTD) and the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA).

During the workshop, several citizen science projects dedicated to the measurement of radioactivity in the environment were presented. Discussions focused on existing initiatives, challenges encountered and future opportunities for strengthening the European dimension of citizen science in radioactivity monitoring.

Participants also discussed the sustainability of citizen involvement and the integration of citizen data into decision-making processes. The meeting provided an opportunity for networking and collaboration between OpenRadiation and European citizen science players, in particular with the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA). The latter, through its Executive Director, offered to act as a think-tank for the coordination of radioactivity measurement actions, while benefiting from feedback from OpenRadiation members.
